The following vision statement was written by the C4WS management committee in November 2004 before C4WS opened for the first time in January 2005.
We believe in Jesus Christ
Who came to share our lives, to encourage and liberate us.
He is amongst us all,
Especially those without warmth, food and shelter
We believe in a Church that has, as a priority,
A response to those who are homeless or badly-housed.
We believe in the power of faith,
Not the power of oppression or rejection
We believe that Jesus rose from the dead
To give us a new life of freedom,
Of service, of witness,
Of hope.
“I was hungry and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. ……. I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.”
Jesus’ words, Matthew 25: 41-45
It is from this starting point that this project has been formed.
C4WS pro-actively assists its guests in their efforts to secure more permanent accommodation and advises guests on specific services that meet their particular needs. Therefore, beyond meeting immediate needs C4WS attempts to make a difference that has long term significance for each guest.
C4WS offers members of the local community to build a bridge with those they once assumed were unapproachable. Frequently individuals feel uncomfortable as they want to help but don’t believe that giving money will be beneficial. Volunteering at C4WS offers such an opportunity. Furthermore, previous stereotypes of homeless individuals is challenged and volunteers often end up personally benefiting even more than those they are trying to help.
“Do not forget to entertain strangers” Hebrews 13: 2
